Evaluations
Each year in order to make teams as even as possible, AYB conducts evaluations so that the coaches can assess the talent before the teams are picked. It is extremely important that your son/daughter be there if at all possible.
The evaluation schedule is listed below. All evaluations are at the Clearfield Rec. Center. Please have your child there 10 minutes early to register. Thursday, October 14, 2010 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm: 3/4 GIRLS

Draft Night - Wednesday, October 20, 2010 at Williamsville East High School on Paradise Rd. in East Amherst from 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm.
Coaches Meeting - Sunday, October 24, 2010 at Brennan's on Transit Rd. at 6:30. This is an important meeting to attend. Team rosters, schedules and equipment will be handed out plus league and playing rules will be reviewed. Refreshments will be served.
League Play
The first practice will be November 1, 2010. Your coach will call you after the coaches meeting on October 24 or the next day at the latest with details about when and where your first practice is. Official games will start on Saturday, December 4, for grades 3-8; however, on November 20, the league will have its annual Basketfest which is a series of 30 minute scrimmages against other teams in their division. Usually each team will play three mini games. The purpose is for the coaches to see how their team is developing and for the score keepers and timers to get used to the game format.
High School Divisions The girls high school division will begin on Saturday, November 6 and will play only on Saturday afternoons at Clearfield Rec. Center. You will be notified of the time. The boys high school division will begin on Sunday, November 14 and will play only on Sunday evenings at the Clearfield Rec. Center. You should report at 6pm. In both divisions the evaluations will be the first couple of weeks and then teams will be formed. Playing Schedule
The AYB season begins week of November 1, 2010 and runs through mid to late March. Players will be assigned to teams after player evaluations have been held (see dates and times above). With the exception of the High School Divisions, the league schedules all teams so that they play for one hour twice a week. Some of these sessions will be practices and some will be games. Each team typically plays 14-16 games during the regular season except for the 3/4 levels as more practice is given to this division. All teams make the playoffs, which are double elimination. The league does not own, nor does it control, a basketball facility. AYB uses Town of Amherst's Clearfield Recreation Center and facilities in the Williamsville and Sweet Home school districts. We also have practices/games at the Amherst Youth Foundation, JCC, St. Greg's, 1st Trinity Church, and ECC-North. Therefore, we are at the mercy of the town and school districts and the other facilities in the allocation of gym time. Every effort is made to schedule every team to play once during the week (usually in the 6:00-10:00pm range) and once on Saturday. During the week, it is typical for days and times to rotate so that all divisions share in those times viewed as desirable and those viewed as less than desirable. Events at Dick's Sporting Goods at Transit Road-2010 season October 7, Thursday, 6:30-7:30pm, open registration by check or cash only. Look for our table and our AYB banner. October 24, Sunday, 11am-3pm, AYB Family Day at Dick's. This is our 4th year that we have had this event. It entitles each AYB registrant to take 15% off on any goods you purchase on this evening. The 15% coupons will be available at the evaluations on the 14th, 15th, and 16th of October. Be sure to pick one up that day! This is a great way to support Dick's Sporting Good Stores for their tremendous support for AYB. October 24, Sunday, 6:30pm, Coaches meeting at Brennan's Tavern at the corner of Main/Transit, next to Dunn Tire. If you are selected to be a coach, you will be notified by your coordinator at least one week in advance. This meeting is very important as team rosters will be passed out, rules explained, schedules distributed, and equipment passed out. Food and beverages will be served. |
