Amherst Youth Basketball
2010-2011 (revised 8/10)
 
All Levels

1.No jewelry may be worn at practices or games.  If an earring can't be removed, it may be covered with a band aid, nothing else.  AYB strongly suggests that the earring be removed if possible.

2.Game Time: Games consist of four 8-minute quarters.

a) The clock stops at the 4:00 mark of every quarter.

b) At the first natural break after 4:00, the referee will stop play in order to allow for substitutions,as described below. This is NOT a timeout. It is a very brief delay in play to allow for substitutions; when the timekeeper stops the clock and notifies the referee, play may continue at the discretion of the official if a player is driving towards the basket for an uncontested fast break shot, but play stops when a player gains control of the ball after the shot or it goes out of bounds.

c) The clock stops during foul shots.

d) The clock stops during the last 2 minutes of each half on all whistles.

e) The clock stops during a significant delay in play (injury, etc.).

f) Except as noted, the clock should be running.

3. Rules interpretation and decisions are at the discretion of the referees.

4. Two (2) timeouts per team per half.

5. No overtime during the regular season – games can end in a tie.

6. The team wearing white jerseys will always be the home team on the scoreboard.

7. A player fouls out on the fifth foul. When a player fouls out or is disqualified, a replacement is chosen of comparable ability for the remainder of that period.This has no effect on the substitution scheme described in #10 below.  During the regular season, if a team has only 5 eligible players and one of them fouls out, that player will remain in the game and subsequent fouls on that player bear the consequences and possession of the ball.During the playoffs, if a team has only 5 eligible players, and one fouls out, the team continues with only 4 players.

8. On all behavioral technical fouls, 2 pts. and possession of ball will be awarded to the opposing team.

9.On administrative technical fouls, 2 fouls shots will be taken and possession of the ball will be awarded to the opposing team (e.g., requesting a time out when none remain).

10.Substitutions: An enumeration schedule will be used to dictate substitutions.Before the opening tip-off, coaches will exchange an enumerated (i.e., numbered) listing of their players using the AYB “Playing Rotation” form. Given 8 players, with player #1 fouling out at the start of the 2nd half followed immediately by the arrival of your star player, your rotation is as follows: [1,2,3,4,5],[6,7,8,1,2],[3,4,5,6,7],[8,1,2,3,4],[5,6,7,8,1],[2,3,4,5,6],[7,8,9,2,3],[4,5,6,7,8] Note that your “star” player who arrived just after halftime plays exactly 1 of the 8 periods, while the player who fouled out right at the start of the second half plays for 3 full periods.

3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th Grade Boys
3-4th Grade Girls; 5-6th Grade Girls;7-8th Grade Girls

2.Foul Shots

2.1.5th and 6th Grade Boys & 5/6th Grade Girls;7/8 Grade Girls

2.1.1.Non-Shooting Foul: 1-and-1 on the 7th, 8th, and 9th foul of each half

2.1.2.Non-Shooting Foul: 2 shots on the 10th and subsequent foul of each half
2.1.3.Shooting Foul (shot missed): 2 shots

2.1.4.Shooting Foul (shot made – goal counts): 1 shot
2.1.5.No penalty for the shooter going over the foul line on follow through for 5th grade boys and 5/6 grade girls

2.2. 3-4th Grade Boys & 3-4th Grade Girls
2.2.1.On shooting fouls (shot missed): 1 point and possession
2.2.2.On shooting fouls (shot made): 2 points and possession retained
2.2.3.On the 9th and subsequent non-shooting fouls of each half: 1 point and possession

3. Defense

3.1.1. 3-4th Boys; 5th and 6th Boys;3/4 Girls, 5-6th Girls:

3.1.1.1. Teams must play player-to-player defense and be within 6 feet of the person he/she is guarding; no zones are allowed.  If an offensive player is outside the arc, then the defensive player must be no more that 6 feet from the arc and be between the player he/she is guarding and the basket.  A defensive player may "double-team the ball-only the person with the ball may be double-teamed. However, there is no double-teaming the ball in the 3/4 girl division.
3.1.1.2. If not double-teaming, a defensive player must be within 6 feet of the person they are guarding (assuming the person being guarded is within the 3-point arc).

3.2. Backcourt Defense

3.2.1. There will be no pressing in these levels in the backcourt.  For the girl's divisions, there will be a 10 second rule for advancing the ball over half court.


 

7th and 8th Grade Boys

High School Rules are followed unless otherwise noted.

1.Foul Shots

1.1.Non-Shooting Foul: 1-and-1 on the 7th, 8th, and 9th foul of each half

1.2.Non-Shooting Foul: 2 shots on the 10th and subsequent foul of each half

1.3.Shooting Foul (shot missed): 2 shots if 2-point attempt; 3 shots if 3-point attempt

1.4.Shooting Foul (shot made – goal counts): 1 shot

2.Defense

2.1.Teams must play player-to-player defense and be within 6 feet of the person he/she is guarding; no zones are allowed.  If an offensive player is outside the are, then the defensive player must be no more that 6 feet from the arc and be between the player he is guarding and the basket.  A defensive player may "double-team" the ball - only the person with the ball may be double-teamed.

2.1.1. The player with the ball, and only the player with the ball, may be defended by multiple players who are each “double teaming” the ball.

2.3. 8th Boys: Full court (backcourt) defense is permitted during the entire game. No zones allowed, even in the backcourt. Only man-to-man defense. Players may double-team (or more) only the player with the ball.
